Is Mould Hijacking Your Hormones/Fertility

Posted by Riannon Page on

When it comes to fertility, most women think of nutrition, stress, age, or even family history. But one factor that often flies under the radar? Mould exposure.
We usually think of mould as something growing on a bathroom wall or the food at the back of the fridge. But mould also releases tiny, invisible particles into the air called mycotoxins, that we can breathe in or absorb through contact. For some people, this isn’t a big deal. For others, especially women navigating hormone imbalance and fertility journey, mould can become an unexpected barrier.
Mould as a Hormone Disruptor
Certain mycotoxins are known as endocrine disruptors. This means they can interfere with the way your hormones send messages throughout the body.
Instead of a smooth hormonal symphony required for balance and ovulation, the signals can become discordant.
One of the biggest effects is on oestrogen balance. Mould can:
  • Increase the body’s oestrogen load
  • Slow down the liver’s ability to clear excess oestrogen
  • Lower progesterone’s calming, balancing influence, but also it's fertility benefits
This can create a state often referred to as oestrogen dominance, where the effects of oestrogen overshadow the benefits of progesterone. Women might notice heavier or more painful periods, breast tenderness, mood swings, irregular cycles, or difficulty conceiving.
Mould & Inflammation
Fertility isn’t just about producing eggs, it’s also about egg quality and creating the right environment for implantation. Mould exposure has been linked with increased inflammation and oxidative stress. Both of these can interfere with egg quality and therefore fertility outcomes.
Hidden Water Damage is More Common Than You Think
In Australia, around 1 in 3 homes (or even more!) are water damaged and affected by mould. Even if you can’t see mould, it might still be there, hidden behind walls, inside ceiling cavities, behind cabinetry, or under floorboards. Early clues include bubbling or peeling paint, rust stains, watermarks, or persistent condensation. These invisible moisture problems can quietly add extra burden to your body particularly when you’re trying to support hormone balance and fertility.
Preconception Care & The Home Environment
When planning for pregnancy, your home environment plays a big role too. Reducing mould exposure helps to lower invisible stress on your body, creating more space for hormones to find their natural balance. The right food, supplements, and stress management strategies can be a game changer in overcoming mould exposure and supporting your hormone and fertility journey.
