Understanding Estrogen: Its Functions and Signs of Imbalance

Posted by Riannon Page on

What is Estrogen…

Estrogen is a crucial sex hormone produced by our ovaries, adrenal glands, and, to a lesser extent, our fat cells. Our bodies start to generate estrogen as we approach our teenage years, and this production continues until we reach menopause. Estrogen levels not only rise and fall throughout our lives, but they also fluctuate month-to-month in tandem with our menstrual cycles. At ovulation, estrogen levels peak, promoting the thickening of the uterine lining and the thinning of cervical mucus. This prepares our bodies for conception and pregnancy, and estrogen levels remain relatively high until menstruation.

The Impact of Estrogen on Our Health

In addition to its vital role in the female reproductive system, estrogen plays a significant part in maintaining our nervous system, cardiovascular health, and bone strength. Although estrogen is an essential hormone for our well-being, excessive amounts can lead to unpleasant symptoms and throw our bodies off balance.

Signs of High Estrogen Levels

If you suspect that your estrogen levels are too high, watch for the following signs and

symptoms:
1. Breast tenderness
2. Bloating
3. Mood swings
4. Heavy periods
5. Period pain
6. Headaches or migraines
7. Weight gain
8. Memory problems
9. Hair loss
10. Fluid retention

Professional Guidance for Hormonal Imbalance

If you are experiencing any of these signs and symptoms, it's essential to consult with a naturopath or other healthcare professional. They can help you determine the cause of your excess estrogen and work with you to rebalance your hormones, guiding you toward improved overall health and well-being.
