Supporting Your Vaginal Microbiome With Your Sanitary Products

Posted by Riannon Page on

The health of your vaginal microbiome plays a massive role in hormonal health! Just like the gut, the vaginal microbiome is filled with a very delicate balance of beneficial flora that work to keep a healthy pH and prevent the overgrowth of any unwanted bacteria or fungi.

One crucial aspect that often goes overlooked in women's health is the choice of sanitary products used during menstruation. These have a massive impact on the health of your vaginal microbiome! Many conventional sanitary pads and tampons are made from non-organic cotton, which can have significant implications for both our health and the environment.

Non-organic cotton is one of the most heavily sprayed crops globally. Pesticides, herbicides, and synthetic fertilizers are routinely used in its cultivation. These chemicals can leave residues on the cotton fibers, which, when in direct contact with sensitive vaginal tissue, may lead to irritation and disrupt the delicate balance of the vaginal microbiome. By opting for organic cotton sanitary pads or tampons, women can significantly reduce their exposure to potentially harmful chemicals during menstruation.

Just recently the University of California, Berkeley, led the world's first study into the presence of heavy metals in 14 popular tampon brands and found toxic metals in every sample tested! Traces of 16 types of metals were found within the samples.

Menstruation is not just a physiological process but a vital detoxification mechanism for the body. It's a time when the uterus sheds its lining, releasing toxins and waste products accumulated over the menstrual cycle.

In Chinese medicine restricting or interfering with this natural flow (such as through tampons) can actually disrupt the body's natural detoxification process. On top of that inserting tampons containing toxins and chemicals into such a highly sensitive area on a regular basis puts the health of the vagina at risk to a number of conditions, including increased susceptibility to infections, reproductive health issues, and potentially even systemic health impacts through absorption into the bloodstream.

So what can you do to support your vaginal microbiome health?

  • Ensure any form of sanitary product you are using is organic cotton. We highly recommend the TOMs Organic or Femme Organic ranges.
  • Only use water on the area, no soaps or washes. The vagina is a self cleaning organ!
  • Opt for quality period cups or period undies from ModiBody or TOMs where you can to prevent any chemical exposure and enhance detoxification during your menstrual cycle.
  • Opt for organic cotton underwear.

By making these mindful choices, you can support the health of your vaginal microbiome and overall well-being. Remember, your body deserves the best care, especially during menstruation.
